Living near the water, bathing in the light – De Nieuwe Dokken Ghent, Belgium

The “De Nieuwe Dokken” project is a sustainable mixed residential development located on the Schipperskaai in Ghent, part of the former harbour area very near to the historic city center.
This development comprises a total of 400 homes of different typologies, including an underground parking, green spaces, commercial spaces, offices and supporting facilities. A school has been built by the city.

 

Phasing

The central zone of the development with”The Faar” & “Dek” (developed with Stéphane Beel architects and BLAF architects) has been finished in 2020.
Currently 2 buildings of the northern zone are under construction, and the others are under study.
For the South area, the allotment permits are prepared, to start design soon.

Sustainability

The entire development will have a sustainability score of +93. “The Faar” holds a Breeam Excellent certificate.
The site has its own wastewater treatment plant and a fossil free heating network.  These services are operated by the ESCO DUCOOP, that has already obtained the 1st prize of “radical innovators” for the project.
In addition to an energetically sustainable approach, the project focusses on sustainable and contemporary mobility. Share-bikes and electric car-sharing parking spaces are provided. Collective lockers are provided for parcel deliveries.
